andy warhol hasn't got long to live
i'm still reading andy warhol's diary as i go to bed at night. there isn't much left now and i find myself wishing that i could warn him somehow. apparently he died because of some hospital mistake and he had a heart attack due to water intoxication. such a random way to go. and he was deathly afraid of hospitals. so there you go. i like his diary much more than i like any of his art and now i want to read a biography or two on him.

he is so odd and endearing. i like how little bits slip through all the accounting of taxi fairs and such. i had my students read selections last semester, but they were all bored.

yes, odd and endearing. and he is constantly hurt by people neglecting him in little ways. and although a star himself he is so starstruck by so many celebrities. the story of steve jobs installing a mac in 1984 at sean lennon's birthday party in the dakota with yoko ono, warhol, and lots of other famous people there sounds fascinating. his concerns in the diary are often the things that all of us worry about most but don't like to talk about, our petty money concerns, whether people like us and why people are nice or mean to us at the moment, just trying to have an interesting day. also his reactions to news events, tv shows, etc. maybe someday a more complete diary will be released in multiple volumes with footnotes. i wonder if any material was edited or omitted to protect anyone that might be able to be printed at a later date. i think the intro said that some of the more banal entries were left out. but it's nice to be inside the head of a historical figure in such an intimate way, with the perspective on art and society that he has. i definitely need to read more diaries.
